Collects nine short stories previously published in The Philadelphia Times. The title story, set in Monte Carlo, concerns the vagaries of luck at roulette. In "A Very Curious Story" a Southerner is returning home from a work assignment in Mendoza, where he had a romantic fling with a native woman, now cast aside by him so he can marry a young woman back home. The scorned lover follows him home and, turning herself into a cobra, kills her rival and then slips away. "Morley's Valentine" is one of the century's many imitations of "A Christmas Carol." Most of the stories could be described as sentimental tragedies. This is the only title by her recorded in Wright or Smith.
