Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. This set is complete through 1973. Three volumes were added later. Volumes 1 through 19 are included in this set.The Annals of America is not a narrative history. It is Encyclopaedia Britannica?s multi-volume collection of American primary sources, issued from Chicago beginning in 1968, with Mortimer J. Adler as editor-in-chief and Charles Van Doren among the editors. Later printings and supplements carried the set into the 1970s and 1980s.The original core is 18 chronological volumes, from 1493 to 1968, plus a two-volume Conspectus, Great Issues in American Life. Some sets grew past 20 volumes as later years were added. Each volume reprints speeches, laws, letters, essays, court opinions, and other documents, with short editorial notes rather than a continuous story. The point, in the spirit of Britannica?s Great Books, is to let the reader meet the sources in order.ABOUT THIS SET: Bound in matching clay blue cloth with blind debossed title on each cover. Silver foil lettering and lining on each numbered spine. Dual columned. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos. Each volume is indexed. Each book measures 9.5 inches tall x 6.25 inches wide with varying thicknesses (averaging about an inch to an inch and a half thick). On a shelf, this set spans a hair over 26 inches and weighs 42 lbs.VOLUMES INCLUDE:- Volume 1: 1493?1754, Discovering a New World. 529 pp.- Volume 2: 1755?1783, Resistance and Revolution. 624 pp.- Volume 3: 1784?1796, Organizing the New Nation. 620 pp. - Volume 4: 1797?1820, Domestic Expansion and Foreign Entanglements. 656 pp.- Volume 5: 1821?1832, Steps Toward Equalitarianism. 600 pp. - Volume 6: 1833?1840, The Challenge of a Continent. 581 pp. - Volume 7: 1841?1849, Manifest Destiny. 569 pp.- Volume 8: 1850?1857, A House Dividing. 510 pp. - Volume 9: 1858?1865, The Crisis of the Union. 646 pp. - Volume 10: 1866?1883, Reconstruction and Industrialization. 612 p.- Volume 11: 1884?1894, Agrarianism and Urbanization. 592 pp.- Volume 12: 1895?1904, Populism, Imperialism, and Reform. 607 pp.- Volume 13: 1905?1915, The Progressive Era. 584 pp. - Volume 14: 1916?1928, World War and Prosperity. 624 pp. - Volume 15: 1929?1939, The Great Depression. 611 pp. - Volume 16: 1940?1949, The Second World War and After. 628 pp. - Volume 17: 1950?1960, Cold War in the Nuclear Age. 599 pp. - Volume 18: 1961?1968, The Burdens of World Power. 689 pp. - Volume 19: 1969-1973, Detente and Domestic Crisis. 439 pp. CONDITION: This is a very, very nice, near fine set with only light occasional external soiling/fading, and mildly toned leaves.
