Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. An important scholarly collection of Isaac Newton's writings on natural philosophy, edited and introduced by distinguished historian of science I. Bernard Cohen, with assistance from Robert E. Schofield. First published by Harvard University Press in 1958, this volume gathers Newton's scientific…papers and correspondence beyond his more readily available Principia and Opticks. The contents include Newton's contributions to the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society; his optical papers and exchanges with contemporary critics; his letter to Robert Boyle concerning the "De Natura Acidorum"; his letters to Richard Bentley; material connected with the Boyle Lectures; Edmond Halley's publications concerning the Principia; and an early published biography of Newton. Explanatory prefaces are supplied by Marie Boas, Charles Coulston Gillispie, Thomas S. Kuhn, and Perry Miller. Much of the original material is reproduced in facsimile, preserving early typography, diagrams, and the appearance of the historical documents. Condition: Very Good. Original rust-colored cloth binding with black spine label and gilt lettering. Spine lettering remains bright and clearly legible, with light rubbing, minor shelf wear, and a few small surface marks. Text-block edges show mild age toning and dusting. Binding appears firm and square. Interior pages are clean and well preserved, with no ownership inscription, underlining, or annotation observed in the photographed portions. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait, facsimile title pages, original scientific papers, correspondence, and diagrams. Lacking the original dust jacket. The first edition contains 501 pages and was substantially revised and expanded for a second edition in 1978. The 1958 edition remains collectible both as the original appearance of Cohen's influential compilation and as an important source collection in Newtonian studies. This volume has strong appeal for collections devoted to Isaac Newton, optics, gravitation, astronomy, the Royal Society, the Scientific Revolution, and the history and philosophy of science.
