Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. On the Move features three different groups of nomadic or semi-nomadic pastoralists in three vastly different regions - the Central Sahara in Africa, the Arabian Gulf and the Central Eurasian steppes - highlighting crosscutting themes relevant to contemporary concerns about the human conditi…on and our planetary future. The book shares lessons we might learn from the ways of pastoral nomads, such as living lightly on the land and working creatively with and through the sometimes challenging natural environments within which they move and know intimately. Themes under exploration include mobility and self-sufficiency; materialism, consumerism and environmental destruction; the potency of experience-based knowledge both practical and richly imaginative; and how the concepts we use affect our appreciation of cultural differences. The book seeks to highlight the gap between the ways these groups see and understand themselves and the stereotypes - both negative and romantic - by which outsiders (from travellers and architects to ecologists and state officials) have represented them or sought either to appropriate or to control and change them. Working against tendencies to view such groups as timeless or remnants of the past, this exhibit follows a historical approach, juxtaposing different historical periods to show how the pastoralists' ways of living and possibilities for flourishing have been affected by both environmental and political forces, specifically from key ruptures of the past century. At the same time, it suggests that we have much to learn from the pastoralist way of life. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The works by the Vietnamese artist who combines archaic and modern elements in an art form that can be called spiritual and naiveNguyen Thi Mai (1966) is a self-taught artist based in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. She works mainly with acrylic painting and lacquer painting, although she is also…experienced with oil on canvas, silk painting and ink painting.Lacquer painting is a traditional Vietnamese art form, with the painting done on wooden boards. However, Nguyen Thi Mai has given this traditional art form a new twist with her own unique technique. It is usual for lacquer paintings to have a glossy finishing. However, with her technique, Mai's lacquer paintings have a matte finishing. Thus the term "unpolished lacquer painting". The matte look has given her lacquer pieces a very subtle and refined look, not found elsewhere on the market. "As a self taught artist, I am very much influenced by the visions I see, the melodies I hear and my deep appreciation for tradition and beauty.Through my art, I advocate, and also seek, balance and harmony. Balance and harmony not only on the canvas, but more importantly, within me. When a pendulum reaches the extremes, it seeks the center. Through balance, we have harmony. Through harmony, we have peace. And through peace, we have happiness." Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The Red Sea Museum catalogue embarks the reader on a cross-cultural journey along the Red Sea, exploring its dazzling beauty and rich diversity through time, stories, and coastline cities. The catalogue is inspired by the unique collection of the Red Sea Museum established by Saudi Arabia's…Ministry of Culture in Jeddah, the city that served as the Red Sea's main port and whose identity was shaped by it. The museum is housed in the iconic Bab Al-Bunt heritage building, which used to be Jeddah's customs house until the 1950s and has historically symbolized a junction point between dwellers of the Red Sea coast and the world, as Jeddah was a major gateway for pilgrims, merchants, explorers, and global travelers for centuries. Through a rare collection of manuscripts, photographs, maps, and ancient and contemporary artifacts and artworks, the Red Sea Museum and its catalogue recount the stories of the Red Sea and the paths of its dwellers. The richly illustrated volume echoes the museum's structure and the exceptional diversity of its collections through four sections: "Living Sea" uncovers the blooming biodiversity of the Red Sea; "Sea of Civilizations" looks at the role played by the Red Sea as a crossroads between East and West connecting various civilizations and geographies through trade, travel, and navigation; "Sea of Faith" allows the readers to travel through time to experience the journeys of the millions of pilgrims who came from all parts of the Islamic world and turned Jeddah into the Gateway to Mecca; "Sea of Inspiration" highlights the vision of modern and contemporary artists and writers on the Red Sea. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
