Full Leather. Condition: Very Good. 33 x 21 cm. Folio. [10], 339, [1], 16, [8], 258 [i.e. 254], [1], 369-391, [1] pp. Engraved frontispiece of Spencer's tomb signed R. White sculp. Older full leather binding, 5 raised bands to spine, leather spine label. Title page printed in red and black. Licensed, October 24th 1678 by Roger L'Estrange. Confusing pagination, with several miss-numbered pages. Several seperate title pages for various works dated 1678. Editorship has been attributed to Dryden, but likely erroneously according the Johnson bibliography. The spine has been professionally rebacked and covers reattached, preserving much of the original spine. There is evidence of a fairly clean bookplate removal to front fixed endpaper and a name has been effaced from the title page. Small chip out of one edge of the frontispiece which does not effect the illustration. This has been repaired/reinforced nicely with tissue paper. Scuffing to the leather. A lovely early edition of Spenser's collected works. References: ESTC R7177. Johnson, A critical bibliography of the works of Edmund Spenser #21. OCLC 889640961.

Near fine. Condition: Hardcover. First complete edition. Folio. (xii),339,(i),16,(8),2,10-11,9-11,14-258,369-391,(i)pp. Early full calf Cambridge-style binding, rebacked in the 19th century with the spine in 7 compartments, intricately gilt; leather label, gilt. Engraved frontispiece. Each work has its own title page, and, for the first three, begins the pagination anew, though 'The Shepherds Calandar' is mispaginated in three places. (2),A-Z4 (Kk mismarked K, Nn mismarked N),Aa-Zz4,Aaa-Zzz4,Aaaa-Iiii4,Kkkk, Aaaaa-Ccccc4. Laves A3 and A4 have a stain in the lower margin, else this is very good. A handsome copy with an inscription dated 1891, probably the date of the reback. Unbeliveably quirky pagination and signature markings, but complete. One of two states of this printing: This state shows two bars with catchword 'Calen-" on page 258, followed by p. 359, 'Calendarium Pastorale'. (A second state lacks the catchword, has 'Finis' between the bars on p. 258, an advertisement leaf, and then the 'Calendarium'.) Carpenter, p. 111. DNB suggests that this edition may have been edited by Dryden. Wing S4965. ESTC R7177.
