Condition: 0. Erstausgabe. - Erzherzog Johann von Österreich (1782-1859) erhielt unter der Vormundschaft seines Bruders Kaiser Franz II. eine militärische Ausbildung und agierte während des 2. Koalitionskriegs im Alter von 18 Jahren als Oberbefehlshaber des österr. Heeres in Bayern. Später wurde er Chef des Genie- und Befestigungswesens und während des 3. Koalitionskriegs Befehlshaber der in Tirol stehenden österr. Korps. Nach einer Niederlage bei Raab behielt er zwar den Organisations- und Verwaltungsposten, rückte sogar 1836 zum Feldmarschall auf, wurde aber politisch und militärisch nicht mehr verwandt. Als Förderer der Steiermark und Gründer des Joanneums in Graz (1811) als Museum und zugleich als Lehranstalt für naturwissenschaftliche Fächer sowie durch seine Heirat einer Postmeisterstochter erwarb er volkstümliche Beliebtheit. Sein Einsatz für den großdeutschen Gedanken, seine liberalen Neigungen und seine Ablehnung des Systems Metternich verschafften ihm Anerkennung sowie die Wahl zum deutschen Reichsverweser durch die deutsche Nationalversammlung im März 1848 in Frankfurt/Main.
