Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. Three very rare closely related items issued to 8th Army personnel on their way home after victory in WW2. All very good, printed on economy war time paper, lightly tanned with some spotting. (ITEM 1) "Venice", Prepared under the Auspices of Education, Eighth Army: Green illustrated tan wraps 12x17cm. (3)pp Introduction, 24pp with b/w illustrations, complete with colour folding map bound in. Undated but 1945. This offers "a quick survey of the city" noting that "Unfortunately, owing to war conditions, almost all the big works in sculpture and painting have been removed for safekeeping" (p1). It details 5 itineraries including the Piazza San Marco, Grand Canal, NW Venice, St John and St Paul parishes, and the district centred on the Chiesa dei Frari. Illustrations focus on architecture and monuments, with a final section giving clues to the different styles. The map, 45x33cm, labelled in Italian, was prepared locally by the Officine Grafiche Carlo Ferrari and shows the whole of Venice with an inset for the Lido. This is not recorded on Worldcat or Library Hub. // (ITEM 2) "A Souvenir of your Visit to Venice", Prepared by Education, Eighth Army, May 1945: b/w printed title panel 12x25 opening out to reveal a b/w map 35x25cm, with key sites numbered in red including the British Army Information Centre in the Piazza San Marco. Add to basket8'' x 5'' folded Eighth Army single sheet pamphlet with double page map of Rome across the centre. Rome fell June 04, 1944 - after battle of Cassino was finally over on May 18 - and the German 'Gustav Line' for defense of Rome, broken. Amazing the Army Education Corps even took time to offer this 'social' intermezzo for its troops as they were battle rushed in the North, arriving at line south of Florence by 4th of August. A fleeting, vanishing? momento indeed. Maybe one - two thousand printed? which not many soldiers put in their back pack when racing out of Rome. Rust spot mark through both leaves. Member of the P.B.F.A. WORLD WAR II (Second).
