The book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Very minor creaser to the right edge of front cover, slight soiling on the back…cover, otherwise perfect. Present exhibition of Finnish art was opened in 1935 at the Riga City Museum of Art. This was an extensive representation of Finnish art including 491 works by nearly 100 artists in fields of painting, sculpture, graphics and applied art. Catalog for an exhibition designed by Latvian prominent artist Sigismunds Vidbergs includes two introduction articles about modern Finnish painting and sculpture, also about graphic art, reviews followed by list of works and 16 art reproductions tables. Historically Finnish art is one of the youngest among North counties. Finland never had been feudal, nor ruled by an aristocracy. The Church, at least its Protestant section, did not contribute to the development of art. Under these circumstances Finnish art gradually began to develop only in the middle of 19th century. The year 1846 became a landmark in the history of Finnish art when the Finnish Art Society was founded. The organization aim was to promote art culture and to provide art education. In the current exhibition participated artists whose creation was related to the period beginning from the end of 19th century: Albert Edelfelt the first Finnish artist who achieved international fame, Akseli Gallen-Kallela best known for his illustration of the Finnish national epic Kalevala, Pekka Halonen the great landscape painter in the national romantic style, Wilho Sjöström one of the most significant landscape and portrait painters of the era, Hugo Simberg early symbolist with emphasis on macabre and supernatural topics, Magnus Enckell symbolist paintings which increasingly bright colors and forms dominated over content, two bright impressionists Willy Finch and Yrjö Ollila who advocated the use of pure colors. The new generation of Finnish artists, like in other countries, was characterized by the variety of movements which denied old traditions in art. Since 1914 expressionism began to gain its place in Finnish art scene. The main representative of the style was T. K. Sallinen whose 6 exhibited works emphased the power of emotion and the importance of individuality. Another prominent expressionist Marcus Collin's works showed experimentations with colors. Expressionism on the exhibition was also introduced by young gifted artists - Ilmari Aalto, Anton Lindfors, Väinö Kunnas. Among participated innovative modernists should be mentioned urban landscapes creator Ragnar Ekelund, leading avant-garde artist and still-life painter Sulho Sipilä, versatile artist Henry Ericsson. At the exhibition were showed works of next sculptors: Ville Vallgren, Felix Nylund, Gunnars Finne, Hannes Autere, Gunnar Elfgren. Graphic art in Finland has only existed since the late of 19th century. Opposite to many foreign examples, Finnish graphic art was developed as independent form of art separate from posters and book illustrations. In the spotlight was engraving and close to it printmaking techniques, lithography was much less popular. Among outstanding graphic artists represented in the exhibition were Akseli Gallen-Kallela, Albert Edelfelt, Hugo Simberg, Henry Ericsson, Frans Nyberg, Väinö Hämäläinen, Santeri Salokivi, Kaarlo Hilden, Eric Väsström, Reino Harsti, Bruno Aspelin etc.
