This rare copy is a substantial Victorian natural?history compendium, combining taxonomic description, life?history observation, and a distinctly mid?19th?century illustrative style. Newman's volume is a comprehensive survey of British Lepidoptera, written by one of the most influential entomologists of his generation. It covers: Butterflies and macro?moths of Great Britain, arranged by family and species Descriptions of adult insects, larvae, pupae, and food?plants. Notes on behaviour, habitats, and seasonal appearance Illustrations intended to aid identification, typical of Victorian natural?history publishing The work belongs to the era when natural history was shifting from gentleman?collector enthusiasm toward more systematic scientific documentation. Newman's prose is accessible, often anecdotal, and aimed at both amateur and serious naturalists. Ref LLL 7.
