This account of the Klondike Gold Rush, first published serially in "The Alaska Sportsman Magazine", was largely informed by the memories and diaries from 1897-1898 of Ella's father, Edward Burchall Lung. Robert W. Service, the Poet of the Yukon, encouraged Ella to publish. It includes a chapter on Joaquin Miller, the reporter who befriended E. B. Lung. With 58 illustrations. Martinsen followed this memoir with a memoir of her mother, TRAIL TO NORTH STAR GOLD.

The book itself has a trace of rubbing to spine ends and tips of corners. A little loose at the spine. But no bumps, tears or creases, no markings. The unclipped jacket is rubbed, has edgewear with chipping. Previous owner has put a piece of clear tape at head of DJ spine. Jacket is now in a protective cover. Diary of a young accountant from Tacoma. He "was there; he saw it all; and he reported it as he saw it." The title on the jacket is "Black Sand and Gold : A True Story of the Alaska-Klondike Gold Rush.".
