"On the 'Rotational Coefficient' in Nickel and Cobalt" in the London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science" printed in London, Taylor & Francis, September 1881, volume 12 no. 74. The Edwin Hall appears on pp 157-172 in the full volume of vi, (ii), 452pp., 11 plates (some folding). There is some fairly heavy foxing in the first 10pp and the last 8pp or so, otherwise the text is mostly very crisp and clean. There's also an old small rubber stamp at the bottom of the title page. A FINE copy but for that restricted bit of foxing. [++] Newly and beautifully rebound in half calf and marbled boards, with raised bands and dentelle decorations. [++] This is the second paper by Hall on the discovery of the effect that bears his name. "Hall is best known for the effect bearing his name; it formed the basis of his Ph.D. dissertation and was the subject of many of his later researches. He was stimulated by Rowland to question a statement in Maxwell s Electricity and Magnetism that the force acting on a conductor in a magnetic field acts on the conductor directly and not on the electric current. Hall s experimental persistence was rewarded when he found that a current through a gold conductor in a magnetic field produced an electric potential perpendicular to both the current and the field. The notion that this was due to simple interaction between the current and the field had to be abandoned, however, when other metals were found for which the effect was in a direction opposite to that predicted. **Hall s discovery was termed by Kelvin as comparable with the greatest ever made by Michael Faraday.** It sparked interest in studies in this area, and three other transverse effects were soon discovered; they bear the names of Andreas von Ettingshausen, Walther Nernst, and Augusto Righi and Sylvestre Leduc."--Hall, Edwin Herbert." Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography, vol. 6, Charles Scribner's Sons, 2008, pp. 51-52. Aside from Gutenberg and his immediate associates, there are no figures more important in the early history of printing than Sweynheym and Pannartz, the earliest printers outside Germany. First at Subiaco and later in Rome, they produced an imposing catalogue of first editions of ancient authors, which for the first time systematically exploited the potential of the new technology as a means for disseminating humanistic texts to a large audience. The present scholarly work is the first book to create from the available information a broadly based and detailed picture of the activities of these two printers. The book examines in a full and careful way their lives and achievements within the context of their newly developed craft as well as the humanistic environment they encountered in Rome in the 1460s and 1470s. In the process of his account, Professor Hall challenges a number of widely held assumptions about the origins of printing in Italy. The volume is printed on luxurious mould made Frankfurt paper by Henry Morris at the Bird & Bull Press, for more than 40 years one of America's most distinguished private presses. The 14 1/2 x 10 1/2" leaves are in excellent condition, and they show to good advantage the famous and beautiful type Sweynheym and Pannartz first used in 1467, recognized now as the earliest truly roman font. Even though Sweynheym and Pannartz produced more than 50 different editions, their press runs were normally only 275 copies. Consequently, their books are now very rare, and complete copies are extravagantly priced. The present leaf book offers an uncommon opportunity for research libraries as well as collectors interested in early printing or in private press work and the book arts to obtain an example of the work of Sweynheym and Pannartz in a form that is handsomely produced and at the same time not prohibitively expensive.
