Writing in the London, England Art Journal in 1898, Miss Rose Kingsley stated, upon her return from a visit to America and the Rookwood Pottery, that Rookwood's work "will hold its own with any in the Old World. Out of the clay of her native place she [Mrs. Storer, founder of the Pottery] has developed the most original and beautiful art industry in the United States." In the first two decades of its existence, Roockwood won two first prizes, three Gold Medals and six Grand Prizes, including the Grand Prix won at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, 1900; the Grand Prix of the Exposition Inernationale de Ceramique et de Verrerie in St. Petersburg, 1901, and the Grand Prix of the International Exposition of Modern Decorative Arts in Turin, 1902. In order that those less familiar with the earlier artistic achievements of of Rookwood Pottery may better recognize and appreciate their beauty, the authors have chosen, for this book, those pieces from their collections which they feel best exemplify Roockwood in its years of splendor.
