Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. Illustrated Edition. Robin Hood, with an introduction by George Cockburn Harvey and illustrations by noted American artist Edwin John Prittie. Published in Philadelphia by The John C. Winston Company as part of its Children's Book-Shelf series. Copyright 1923 by Winston, with an additional 1925 copyright notice for the British Dominions and Possessions; this copy is therefore identified as a 1925 issue of the earlier Winston edition. A visually impressive production featuring Prittie's extensive and highly accomplished illustration program: four full-page color plates, sixteen full-page line illustrations, an illustrated title-page vignette, pictorial endpapers printed in green, and a large mounted color illustration on the front cover. Prittie's circular "EJP" monogram appears within the line drawings, while the color artwork is signed Edwin John Prittie. The illustrations are the outstanding feature of this edition. Prittie combines dramatic action, carefully rendered medieval costume and weaponry, expressive character studies, and densely detailed forest settings. Particularly striking scenes include Robin's archery exhibition, the fight between Little John and the cook, the river crossing, encounters in Sherwood Forest, and the full-color combat plates. Many of the black-and-white illustrations are accompanied by captions in Gothic lettering within decorative scroll borders. Bound in green-gray cloth with mounted pictorial cover panel, gilt border, spine title, and Children's Book-Shelf device. The cover illustration remains colorful and appealing. Cloth shows general age-related soiling, rubbing, edge wear, and fading, particularly along the spine. Corners and spine ends are rubbed. The mounted cover panel has scattered scratches and surface wear but remains firmly attached and visually strong. Binding remains intact. Pages and plates show age-toning, scattered foxing, and occasional handling soil, with heavier foxing visible on the title page and some preliminary and illustrated leaves. Pictorial endpapers show soil and an old paper remnant or surface abrasion near the lower front gutter. Vintage ownership stamp of "James N. Rees, 826 Main St., Westport, Conn." appears on the front endpaper. No dust jacket. No connection to any other collection or family provenance is asserted. A complete and exceptionally decorative presentation of the Robin Hood legends, desirable for collectors of Golden Age illustration, Edwin John Prittie, classic children's literature, Sherwood Forest fiction, and early twentieth-century pictorial bindings. The combination of four color plates, numerous full-page line drawings, illustrated endpapers, and a vivid mounted cover makes this a particularly attractive display copy despite its age-related wear. Bookseller's Note Although the copyright page carries both 1923 and 1925 dates, the later British Dominions copyright establishes this as a 1925 issue, not the first 1923 issue. All illustrations have been checked against the printed List of Illustrations before final listing. Edwin John Prittie (illustrator).
