Hardcover. Condition: Good. 685 pp. Tightly bound. Text is free of markings. No ownership markings. Published without dust jacket. PLEASE NOTE: The reason for the lower "good" rating is because the top corners of both the boards and the pages are bumped, not affecting the text. This copy is smyth sewn. Smyth sewing is a method of bookbinding where groups of folded pages (referred to as signatures) are stitched together using binder thread. Each folded signature is sewn together individually with multiple stitches and then joined with other signatures to create the complete book block. This is the traditional and best method of bookbinding.

During the period covered in this Volume 3 a great deal was learned about amphibious warfare. The soundness of the doctrine developed in the prewar years by dedicated Navy and Marine Corps officers. Anticipating the demands of a vast naval campaign they developed requirements and tested prototypes for the landing craft and vehicles that began to appear in large numbers at the time of the Central Pacific battles. Two converging drives on the core of Japanese defenses, one mounted in the Southwest Pacific under General Macarthur's command, the other in the Central Pacific under Admiral Nimitz. The Central Pacific operations began at Tarawa in late 1943 and continued into the Gilberts, Marshalls and Marianas. The Marine Corps brought to the war the priceless ingredient developed during the years of peace and that was the amphibious doctrines and techniques that made possible the trans-Pacific advance.
