This book presents the collected correspondence between an American and an English lawyer who were friends despite their vastly different perspectives on the American Civil War. Although they were personally sympathetic with each other, the men represented the contrasting opinions that fueled national tensions at the time. Their frank and often passionate discussion involves matters of foreign policy, national character, and the status of slavery in the United States. This compelling book offers a unique opportunity to better perceive the great conflict that divided the United States from Britain and to understand the ways that these two nations regarded each other during this tense and critical period in history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
