This book provides an intriguing insight into the history of volunteer armies in the UK, with a specific focus on the National Guard, formed as part of the British Volunteer movement during World War I. The author covers the early days of volunteering in Britain, tracing its development from the 18th century through to the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. Considerable attention is given to the role played by the National Guard in defending London and digging trenches during World War I, as well as their contributions to other vital war efforts. The book also examines the social and patriotic motivations of the men who joined the National Guard, many of whom were over military age or had physical disabilities that prevented them from serving in the regular army. Through meticulous research and analysis, the author presents a compelling account of the impact these citizen soldiers had on the war effort and the broader social context of the time. This book is a valuable contribution to the understanding of the role of volunteers in wartime, highlighting their commitment, resilience, and the enduring spirit of patriotism. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

'Diner-Out' was a regular contributor to the "Daily Mail" on those most important subjects - Good Food and Good Wine.
