".Hale drew his revolver on Krempkau and told Campbell to draw, that he had him covered. Campbell said that it was not his fight and started away, seeing that there would be an encounter. Hale and Krempkau had commenced shooting about the same time. Hale fell once against a pillar with a death wound, but kept on shooting. Krempkau received a death wound at first, but stood on his feet and shot several times. One of the other wounded men shot Campbell in the foot as he was walking across the street. About this time, Marshal Stoudenmire came running up and shot Hale and killed an observer, and then shot Campbell in his right arm. Campbell attempted to draw with his left hand and Stoudenmire shot him to the ground." At the intersection of El Paso Street and San Antonio Avenue in downtown El Paso, a bronze plaque affixed to the Hotel Paso del Norte reads: Four men in Five Seconds, Near this spot on April 14, 1881, four men were shot to death at almost the same instant, and newspapers in places as far away as Santa Fe, Kansas City, and Chicago hit the streets with headlines which screamed "Bloody Battle," and "War Raging in El Paso." This is the first book devoted to George W. Campbell, one of the victims of this famous shoot-out. George had served as a deputy sheriff and city marshal of El Paso, and came from good Kentucky stock. Family letters from George W. Campbell provide a fresh insight into the man and his character, and contribute additional primary research to the body of facts on southwest history. Illus., Bibliog., Appendix, The Author, and Index. 143pp. 8vo. h/back. With pictorial eps. F. in F. protected dw.
