Efter tronskiftet 1654 startade hans diplomatiska karriär och han blev en av den svenska diplomatins främsta kännare av den samtida stormaktspolitiken. Han adlades 1657 och blev hovkansler 1674. Första upplagan av ?Expositio causarum.?, som 1659 utkom i svensk, tysk och engelsk översättning. Det är krigsmanifestet mot Danmark och tillika diplomaten Coyets viktigaste tryckta arbete, där motiven bakom det förnyade svenska angreppet på Danmark klarlades för den europeiska opinionen.
