Tolstoi and revolutionaries.Tolstoy's personal doctor, Makovitsky, describes Chertkov's influence over the writer as "tremendous and despotic." Sophia alleged that her husband's relationship with Chertkov was homosexual in nature. She implied this in her diary (not all her entries are published to this day) and spoke her mind with Makovitsky and the writer's secretary, Bulgakov. Because of Tolstoy's moral authority, her allegations were dismissed. But this doesn't mean that Sophia's suspicion was unfounded. Tolstoy maintained the relationship because he loved Chertkov and also because he was afraid that Chertkov would not spare him if they broke up despite the fact Chertkov was reporting to the Secret Police. Paperback, 201 pp. Translations of key Soviet works of literary criticism from the 1920s must surely appeal to something of a niche market. Yet this book in its original Russian is often seen as a key text, and is still of great interest nearly a hundred years after it was first published. It deals with a period that is already of specialist interest: the minor Russian prose writers of the early nineteenth century. Few of us in Western Europe or in the USA have even heard of Vyazemsky, Senkovsky, Veltman or Dal. But the constellation of Soviet literary critics who contributed to this seminal anthology of critical essays have done their period proud, which is why this book in translation will appeal to all students of Russian literature in particular and Slavonic Studies in general.
