Former owner's name on the front free endpaper. Valamo ? a monastery on the border of east and west ? was one of the largest and most highly esteemed monasteries in Christendom in the early part of our century. As a result of the Second World War, monastic activity on the islands of Lake Ladoga had to cease. Fortunately, most of the priceless objects in the churches were rescued from the ravages of the war. The nearly thousand-year-old monastery is continuing its activities in the interior of Finland. Its church-bells now resound from New Valamo across the landscape of forests and lakes, proclaiming a message of faith, love and goodwill.
