Einthoven became professor at the University of Leiden in 1886 and in 1924 received the Nobel Prize in medicine for inventing the first practical system of electrocardiography used in medical diagnosis. Blind stamp of the Carnegie Institution of Wahsington Solar Observatory. Fine copy. Einthoven was the father of electro-cardiology. "In 1895, after the London physiologist A. D. Waller had published the curve for the action current of the heart as deduced from the body surface and had announced that he was unable to calculate its true shape (as recorded with Lippmann's capillary electometer), Einthoven repeated this experiment. He defined the physical constants of the capillary electrometer and calculated the true curve, which he called the electrocardiogram." - DSB. Einthoven received the Nobel Prize in 1924 "for his discovery of the mechanism of the electrocardiogram." Nobel, the man and his prizes, pp. 262-265. Wasson, Nobel Prize winners, pp. 294-295.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. vii, 888 pp, 1 leaf [errata]. Recent cloth. Very Good. Entire volume offered. First Edition. Einthoven's first publication on his new string galvanometer. Garrison-Morton 840: "One of the most distinguished of modern physiologists, Einthoven directed much of his research to the development and perfection of recording instruments. His most famous work was in connexion with the string galvanometer." "Einthoven was convinced that records of the electrical activity of the human heart in humans would have clinical value, and his major contribution to medicine was the development of instrumentation leading to the introduction of clinical electrocardiography. Initially Einthoven employed a D'Arsonval moving coil galvanometer, but eventually he discovered that a string galvanometer was better suited to record graphically the electrical activity of the heart. Einthoven's string galvanometer and the instruments derived from it allowed scientists and physicians to study disorders of cardiac impulse formation and conduction in humans. The introduction of the electrocardiogram, together with the discovery of X-rays in 1896, revolutionized the practice of medicine, signalling the advent of the modern era of diagnosis" (Grolier, One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine 89, citing Einthoven's 1902 publication of the first human electrocardiogram). Einthoven was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1924 "for his discovery of the mechanism of the electrocardiogram." This volume is a festschrift for J. Bosscha on the occasion of his 70th birthday.
