Blue pebbled cloth with bright gilt stamping to spine and front board. Some foxing and light soiling to edges; strong toning to front pastedown and rear endpapers; lighter toning to front free endpaper with past owner's (Willis Alston Banks) ink signature; some foxing and soiling to interior pages; ink marks and genealogical notes as well as some smudging to pages 44 and 45; no other such markings readily apparent upon a quick perusal. Laid-in at front endpapers is trimmed sheet of lined paper with genealogical notes regarding Willis Alston Banks; laid-in between pages 166-167 is an envelope containing a November 1949 wedding invitation for Banks family member in Eutaw, Alabama; rear pastedown has sticker for those wishing to order a Banks' coat of arms from a New York City relation. Binding is firm. Else a very good- copy. This second edition builds upon the circa 1906 first edition which only had 139 pages plus plates (per OCLC). The Banks family has long roots in west central Alabama - particularly in Tuscaloosa and Eutaw - as well as Columbus, Mississippi most notably via Dr. James Oliver Banks (1829-1904) who, in addition to a distinguished medical career, rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel while in Confederate service with the Mississippi Infantry, and, with marriages to Martha Jane Coleman (1833-1868) of Greene County and Lucy Watkins Young (1841-1933) of Waverly Plantation, assured some generational wealth with significant real estate holdings in Greene and Tuscaloosa counties in Alabama and Lowndes and Clay counties in Mississippi.…
