He was raised in a nationalist spirit. He studied economics and humanities, then graduated from a military academy. Because of his Jewish origin, he was called up for labor service several times from 1938. In the spring of 1942, he was assigned to one of the cruelest labor service units in the Don Bend. In the winter of 1942, he fled to the Soviet army. In 1945, he returned to Hungary as a partisan.
