About the book >.>.> The sculpture of Hamo Thornycroft (1850-1925) gave expression to the mood of his age: not only to the Victorians' innate romanticism, but also to their growing belief in the nobility of mankind, in the Spirit of Man, given political voice in the doctrines of Socialism. These feelings are given form in the dominating figure of King Alfred on his granite plinth, the more pensive Gladstone, or the imposing statue of Cromwell, and also in the poetic realism and grace of many of Thornycroft's smaller bronzes. Hamo Thornycroft was a pioneer and leader of the ?New Sculpture?, as well as being a disciple of William Morris's ideas and ideals; indeed, his life-size figures of working men, such as the Mower or the Sower, were the first sculptures of their kind. Hamo Thornycroft came from a family of sculptors; both his parents, Thomas and Mary Thornycroft, were sculptors, and Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort were among those who gave them their patronage and support.
