FIRST EDITION in steel blue cloth with gilt decoration and navy titling, frontis. + 13 illustrations (listed), 257[2]pp. Howes #B-442. Graff #289. Very Good with light wear at corners and sunned spine; front endpapers toned with original owner signature on flyleaf and bookplate on pastedown; has mylar wrap. Biddle, the wife of a officer in the 6th Cavalry, lived at Fort Lyon in Colorado, Fort Robinson in Nebraska. She accompanied her husband extensively, first in the south , then Nevada, California, New Mexico, Kansas and Nebraska. Covers the Modoc War and a detailed account of the Germaine girls who were taken captive by the Indians, along with information about some of the military officers including General Sherman, Miles, Sumner, Chaffee and others including photos. Graff says it is a very good account of Army life at western posts after the Civil War. Nice collectible shape.
