Provenance: Library of Congress, with two small stamps on the cover and one on the rear cover. $50 Dr. Wilhelm Ellenbogen (1863-1961), a member of the Austrian Parliament for more than thirty years, who came here in 1940 as a refugee from nazism, died yesterday in Wadsworth Hospital after a brief illness. His age was 87, One of the best-known figures of European socialism before and after World War I, Dr. Ellenbogen was a senior member of the Austrian Social Democratic party. He was said to have been the last survivor among its founders.When the Nazis came to power, Dr. Ellenbogen fled. In 1939 he made a temporary stay in France, coming to the United States shortly after. In World War II he served as a member of the Austrian Labor Committee in New York, which kept contact with exiled groups and the Austrian underground. Dr. Ellenbogen later became honorary chairman of the Friends of Austrian Labor."--NY Times obituary 1951.

Bedankt sich bei dem kaiserlichen Rat Oskar Berl (1873-1934) für Neujahrswünsche. - Von 1901 bis 1918 gehörte Ellenbogen für die Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei dem Reichsrat an, 1918-34 der Provisorischen Nationalversammlung bzw. dem Nationalrat. Bei den Internationalen Sozialistenkongressen (Zweite Internationale) war er mehrfach Vortragender. 1919 war er Unterstaatssekretär für Handel und Gewerbe, Industrie und Bauten, 1920 wurde er Staatssekretär und Präsident der Staatskommission für Sozialisierung. Im Februar 1934 wurde Ellenbogen verhaftet, aber nach kurzer Zeit wieder freigelassen. Ebenso erging es ihm im März 1938. Am 1. Mai 1938 konnte er Wien verlassen und floh zunächst nach Frankreich, 1940 zu Fuß über die Pyrenäen nach Lissabon und schließlich weiter in die USA. Von 1943 bis 1945 gehörte er dem Vorstand des Austrian Labor Committees (ALC) um Friedrich Adler an, das als Nachfolgeorganisation der Auslandsvertretung der österreichischen Sozialisten (AVOES) galt. - Auf Briefkarte mit gedr.
