John Carter is a former confederate soldier from Virginia who now seeks his fortune with his partner, Powell, in Arizona. But a tribe of savage Indians attacks them and Powell is killed. John pulls Powell's body into a cave for shelter. Suddenly, a strange energy washes over John and his life-essence is pulled out of his body. * John Carter, Warlord of Mars: "Prisoner of the Tharks" - Captured by the Tharks, John is escorted to their kingdom where he is inspected by the king. He lashes out, killing one of the king's men. The king's court applauds John and he is told to follow a female Tharak into a dungeon. There, he is guarded by a dog-like beast. John leaps over the creature, and makes his escape. As he breaks out through an open window, another creature attacks him. Suddenly, the dog-beast leaps upon the second creature, killing it. John realizes that the dog-beast wasn't to guard him, but protect him, and the two walk away from their fallen foe as companions. * Pellucidar: "The Amulet, the Power, and the Hero" - On the surface world, Cogdon Nestor discovers a telegraph giving him an account of the further adventures of David Innes in Pellucidar. Innes has returned to the Earth's Core with the "iron mole" loaded with books, blueprints and supplies. Once in Pellucidar, he goes into a village which is being terrorized by winged creatures. The villagers feel defenseless because their Amulet of Power has been stolen. Armed with swords, Innes and the chief go fight the creatures to win back the Amulet.: Color Illustrations.

Endpapers of book by Daniel Buren. "Since public museums came into being in the late 18th century, artists have looked upon them with a mixture of reverence, complicity, suspicion, and disdain. In The Museum as Muse, artists of many persuasions speak their minds about museums, their functions and spaces, their practices and politics, and their relationship to the art they contain. More than 60 artists are represented by a wide range of works: photographs of museum patrons by Henri Cartier-Bresson and Elliot Erwitt; 'personal museums' and 'cabinets of curiosities' by Charles Wilson Peale, Marcel Duchamp, and Claes Oldenburg; fantasies of the destruction or transformation of museums by Hubert Robert, Ed Ruscha, and Christo and more, including works created especially for this project by contemporary artists, and an anthology of statements and writings by artists about museums. This volume was published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York." -- publisher's statement. Very Good. Light wear to dust-jacket including a 6 mm. tear to spine edge and bumping of upper edge of recto. Light yellowing of page edges. Contents otherwise clean and unmarked.
