First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Ken Davies (illustrator). 1st Edition. Stated First Printing. First Edition. 200 b&w and 40 color plates. As is the case with Ken Davies other book (Artist at Work) that I've listed, this will be the Only signed copy for sale anywhere on the Internet. Moreover, as I stated in the previous listing, there are no other signed copies of either of these two books for sale anywhere. As was the case with the other, the inscription is to Stuart Feld. It reads 'To Stuart Feld-- with my very best wishes, Ken Davies.' 'Stuart Feld graduated from Princeton University in 1957 with an A.B. in the Department of Art & Archaeology. He completed his graduate studies at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University in 1961, and in the same year, became one of the first Fellows at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. From 1962 to 1967 he worked in the Department of American Paintings and Sculpture at The Metropolitan Museum, during which time he co-authored American Paintings: A Catalogue of the Collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1967, Stuart left his post as Associate Curator in Charge of the Department and joined Hirschl & Adler Galleries as a partner, becoming its sole proprietor in 1982.' I was having trouble identifying what the last name in the inscription was (the 'F' is a bit flamboyant) but a read-through of Mr. Davies Wikipedia page clinched it: 'In 1962, he decided to refocus on his Still life painting, and enjoyed further success, with gallery representation from Hirschl & Adler Galleries. His first solo show there was in 1978.' 'Stuart Feld is currently working with Kathleen Burnside on the definitive catalogue raisonné of the work of the American Impressionist painter Childe Hassam.' From Charles B. Ferguson, Director of The New Britain Museum of American Art.: 'Fifty years after Peale, Harnett, Peto, and Haberle were in vogue, Ken Davies is today's ablest artist, a magician in his chosen field.' 'Mr. Davies attended Yale University, where he painted his first important oil painting, "Lighthouses in the Alps". The work captured the attention of New York City cultural figure Lincoln Kirstein, who helped Davies attain showings of his early works in 1950 at the Hewitt Gallery. He also received a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation fellowship that year. His first solo show was at the Hewitt Gallery in 1951, and every painting sold.' Mr. Davies is known for his trompe-l'?il work (a technique that uses realistic imagery to create the optical illusion that the depicted objects exist in three dimensions). 'His labor-intensive technique involves sable brushes, resulting in paintings that appear almost like photographs, but with these trompe-l'?il and Surrealist effects.' 'The painter Robert B. Dance wrote upon the death of Ken Davies in 2017: ' In my opinion as an artist, he was the finest trompe l'oeil painter who ever lived. His work was as near magic as ever I have seen. And he leaves behind a history of matchless artwork which will carry his mark forever. He is one of the very rare artists who have set the standard.' As can be seen in the photos, the green covers are perfectly clean. There's a little bit of color fade just off the top and bottom edges of the front. There really isn't any other wear that needs to be called out. The book is square and very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout. No binding issues. The pages look terrific. They are exceptionally clean. I don't see any soiling or creasing. There are no markings. No attachments. And the author's signed inscription is the only writing to be found anywhere. The dust jacket is quite clean. It does have a few tears off its edges, a 1/4" one off the front bottom edge, a 3/8th" one off the rear top edge and a 1 1/4" one off the rear bottom edge. The fitted protective cover, which I'll place on the jacket after scanning the photos, mostly conceals the smaller tears. There are two thin creases off the front cover edges. The flaps are in excellent condition and very clean. Inscribed by Author(s).
