First Edition
Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. A near-fine copy, splendidly bound in finely woven brown cloth stamped brightly in silver lettering on the spine. Clean and tight throughout, virtually unread. With a discrete ink inscription to grandpa and grandma, dated Oct. 13, 1935. With the 4 black and white photographs of "Herr Hitler" and "Signor Mussolini" and their respective grotesque effigies. In a very good, original dust jacket printed in green and brown. With the price of $2.00 at the top of the inside front flap. Two closed lateral tears along the spine, but not particularly noticeable beneath the Mylar when the jacket is on the book. And a 3" separation at the bottom of the rear jacket fold, but unnoticeable when the jacket is in place, as the paper edges meet seamlessly. A collector's copy, uncommon in dust jacket. "This is a biting attack upon the quackery in our political and intellectual life, a passionate defense of Reason, a counterblast to the fake eloquence of Spenglers Hour of Decision. It subjects fantastic bombast, whether in action or in theory, to a penetrating analysis. There is, in this appeal of a distinguished modern philosopher and man of letters, a full-bodied and sonorous eloquence which seems to recall the voice of a classic Roman senator warning of the approach of barbarian hordes and bending the weight and wisdom of years to a painful, imperative task. The author shows, first, that there has been a revolt against reason in modern times, and that such a revolt is always a symptom of the breakdown of a civilization and the return to the superstitions and emotions of savages or primitive men." ( Dust jacket ) First Edition with "First Edition" on the copyright page.
