This fascinating book presents a dynamic approach for the young collector and beginning student of land, fresh-water, and marine shells. The mollusks are not treated as merely dead shells, found on beaches or seen in collections, but as living animals which have their special place in nature, and unique ways of feeding, reproducing, and defending themselves against predators. The kinds of these invertebrates, where they can be found, and the manner of building a shell collection are covered. New York. Dood, Mead & Company. 80 pp., num. b/w photos, yellow cloth gr. 8 [17.5 x 23.5 cm] [with dust jacket].

Amino acid enantiomeric (D/L) ratios in late Pleistocene, marine mollusks from three uranium-series dated localities (Cayucos and the San Diego Nestor Terrace in California USA and the Magdalena Terrace in Baja California Sur) provide calibration points for establishing a 120,000 yr isochron for interpolation of amino acid age estimates over a broad latitudinal range (35.degree. N to 24.degree. N latitude) of the California-Baja California continental borderland. Leucine enantiomeric ratios in specimens of the bivalve Chione cf. undatella from the Magdalena Terrace, compared with ratios predicted by a kinetic model for 120,000 yr samples with constant (modern) diagenetic temperature, indicate slight paleotemperature reductions (1-2.degree. C) at Magdalena Bay during late Pleistocene glacial episodes in the northern hemisphere. 6 pp., 3 figs, 4.
