Elle a paru pour la première fois en feuilleton en 1849, presque simultanément dans deux journaux et une revue littéraire (Paris, Le National; Bruxelles, La Revue de Paris et L'Indépendance belge). Cette édition française est une adaptation et un abrégé du roman original. Daurand-Forgues utilise notamment la forme épistolaire pour résumer certaines parties, jugées trop longues. Considérée comme très infidèle, sa version a sans doute encouragé Noëmi Lesbazeilles-Souvestre à produire une traduction dans les règles, prétendument autorisée par Charlotte Brontë, publiée en deux volumes en 1854 (Paris, Giraud).
