Soft cover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Signed in black ink on the half-title page by Friedlander. Soft cover. Heavy cardboard wrappers with title blind-stamped on cover, with photographically-illustrated dust jacket with tipped-in duotone plate on debossed dust jacket front. Photographs by Lee Friedlander. Foreword by Andrew Smith. Essay by Emily Ballew Neff. Designed by Skolkin + Chickey. 76 pp., with 51 duotone plates finely printed in China on heavy matte art paper by Oceanic Graphic Printing, Inc., from separations by Thomas Palmer. 12-1/4 x 11-3/8 inches. This first edition was limited to 2300 copies. Published in conjunction with an exhibition at Andrew Smith Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Lee Friedlander's work is widely known for transforming our visual understanding of contemporary American culture. Known for passionately embracing all subject matter, Friedlander photographed nearly every facet of American life from the 1950s to the present. From factories in Pennsylvania, to the jazz scene in New Orleans, to the deserts of the Southwest, Friedlander's complex formal visual strategies continue to influence the way we understand, analyze, and experience modern American experience. Friedlander's work continues to influence photographic practice internationally, in part due to the heightened sense of self-awareness that is a trademark of so many of his photographs and in part because of his ability to embrace wide-ranging subject matter, always interpreting it in an elegance that hadn't existed prior to his work. As New (from Friedlander's personal archive). From the publisher: "Pioneering photographer Lee Friedlander has been making images of what he calls 'the American social landscape' for more than 50 years. His influence reaches across several generations -- through pivotal exhibitions such as The Museum of Modern Art's 2005 retrospective, and through his own specific feel for the book format, evident from the first (self-published) monograph of 1970, Self-Portrait, to recent volumes such as Apples & Olives, Cherry Blossom Time in Japan and Frederick Law Olmsted Landscapes. Friedlander has been visiting Albuquerque, Santa Fe and the Northern New Mexico environs since the late 1960s, and this new volume of work presents a sequence of images made during his travels in the region between the mid-90s and the present. Armed with his signature Hasselblad camera and wandering the back roads in an assortment of rental cars, Friedlander has journeyed from the Plaza of Santa Fe to the adobe-strewn neighborhood barrios and out into the gorgeous, high-altitude desert that surrounds this fabled city. In Lee Friedlander: New Mexico, we see the same attentive curiosity that we've come to expect from this American master who is so adept at creating unity out of diverse shapes and tones in the two-dimensional picture plane." Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is a hand made high school year book assembled by Emily C Lipps who attended Faribault High School in Faribault, Minnesota. She graduated in 1918. Book size about 6 by 9 inches. Bound in tan cloth over boards with front cover gilt lettering and image of a young woman--decorated spine. One of those early Yearbooks where the publisher provided an outline of what to enter in the book and then the student filled-in the book in whatever manner they chose. Book begins with two glued-in photos of the 'Ladies Band' and 'Red Cross Band' marching down Main Street in Faribault. Many hand written entries from classmates and teachers. Includes a rare World War One U. S Government War-Savings Stamps four page brochure. Also includes newspaper clippings and other printed material relating to school graduation. I could say this is rare, but it is actually unique, one of a kind, as are all these old hand-made yearbooks. A reference book for Women's Studies showing how the young girl of the 1918 era was educated. This is one volume in a collection of some 65 of these old Yearbooks ranging from the late 1800's to the 1930's mostly from the Midwest which will be in my book seller catalog titled 'Women'. Usual wear and tear from constant handling while being assembled. GOOD Language: eng Language: eng Language: eng. Signed by Author.

CONDITION: Fine, in a Fine dust jacket, in mylar protector. **A spare, yet most moving prose poetic work of great insight in which culture, time, and language are shown to be at once infinitely fragile, and yet enduringly strong. From the blurb: "In a classroom in Seoul, a young woman watches her Greek language teacher at the blackboard. She tries to speak but has lost her voice. Her teacher finds himself drawn to the silent woman, for day by day he is losing his sight. Soon they discover a deeper pain binds them together. For her, in the space of just a few months, she has lost both her mother and the custody battle for her nine year old son. While for him, it's the pain of growing up between Korea and Germany, being torn between two cultures and languages." Winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature. Signed by Author. Book.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Smith, Kiki (illustrator). Limited Edition. Octavo, 11 by 7 inches, 220 pages. The type is Walbaum, in Monotype composition by Mackenzie & Harris, and in hand composition with type cast at the Bixler Foundry. The artist scratched the images onto negatives that were directly exposed to make polymer plates. The text was printed in black ink, and the images in red-brown ink. The paper was made by Twinrocker Handmade Paper. The binding, done in-house, is hand-sewn, with a terra cotta goatskin spine, beige cloth sides machine-embroidered with the title, author, and artist in a cross-stitch style, and a gold spine title. The slipcase has beige cloth edges with terra-cotta paper sides and spine lable. The image for the extra print was pasted-up by Smith from prints in the book and the negatives were aligned accordingly to make four polymer plates that were assembled for printing on handmade Twinrocker paper of a heavier weight, measuring 24 by 18 inches. The artist hand-colored and gilded a proof to serve as a model for the application, by hand, of vermilion and sanguine inks and silver-white palladium appliqué for the edition. Edition of 40 numbered copies, plus 5 artist's proofs and 5 publisher's proofs, signed by the artist. This is a sampling of Dickinson's poetry with prints by Kiki Smith in the cross-stitch style of samplers made by women in the nineteenth-century, and with cross-stitching on the cover. Hoyem made the selection from poems published prior to 1923 and in the public domain, avoiding conflict with Harvard University, which claims to own the entire literary rights of the poet. He also regularized the punctuation in Dickinson's manuscripts. Smith's prints resemble etchings for their linear quality, but are in fact relief prints printed by letterpress. The artist began scratching exposed film with an etching needle while traveling by airplance, using a pillow in her lap for support, but that distressed the negative, so thereafter she worked on a light table, enabling her to see the images right-reading as they developed. ___POSTAGE: Please note that due to the size of the print, postage will be at cost; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. On offer is a very well-written diary of a New Jersey woman, written at the beginning of WWI This diary measures 6 inches by 3 inches and contains 365 pages. It is approximately 85% complete. The covers are in good condition with some light wear marks. The spine and binding are also in good condition as are the pages. The handwriting is legible. The author of this diary is Emily Caroline Smith. She lived in Boonton, NJ. She was born in April, 1876 and lived her entire life in Morris County, NJ. She passed away in 1956 at the age of 80. Smith is 37 when she writes this diary. The diary covers 1913 as well as a number of entries for 1914. On her mother's side, Smith was a direct descendent of one of the Mayflower settlers. Her paternal great grandfather was Col Hiram Smith. Smith was a veteran of the American Revolutionary War and afterwards, played a prominent role in his community. He was variously Justice of the Peace, County Judge, Sheriff of Morris Co, member of the NJ Legislature, Major and then Lt. Col in the New Jersey Militia. His son, Hiram Smith Jr. , Was a wealthy farmer and property investor. In 1833 he purchased a home that had been built in 1811. That house, known today as the Smith / Baldwin House, remained in the family until 2013, when the local government purchased it as a historical property. When he died, he left his estate to his son Richard, Emily's father. In time, Emily and her sister Marjory inherited the property. Emily sold her share to her sister in 1909. Some moments from Emily's diary are captured here: "Horrors. Another birthday! Did a lot of shopping in A. M. [ ] took O'Dally to the 4: 00 boat. ." [Apr 5, 1913]; "Afternoon to Settlement House to help Deaconess. Called on Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Barclay in the hospital. Evening played bridge with Capt. Colday, Miss [ ] and Luther." [Aug 5, 1913]; "Authors Reading for Hosp. Geo Ade and Sewell Ford read from their stories." [Feb 18, 1914]; "Rainy day - Marjorie came up in A. M. . Sue and I went down home for supper. Back to [ ] in violent rain." [Nov 15, 1914]; "Marjorie came up for all day. We started the childrens comfortables. A stormy day." [Dec 9, 1914]. For a local historian, this is an excellent direct connect to a family with a long history and deep roots in their community. For a researcher in Women's Studies, this diary offers a very good look at the world of a single, relatively well-off woman at the turn of the last century and the attitudes and expectations prevalent at that time.; Manuscripts; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; 365 pages; KEYWORDS: HANDWRITTEN, MANUSCRIPT, DOCUMENT, LETTER, AUTOGRAPH, WRITER, HAND WRITTEN, DOCUMENTS, SIGNED, LETTERS, MANUSCRIPTS, HISTORICAL, HOLOGRAPH, WRITERS, AUTOGRAPHS, PERSONAL, MEMOIR, MEMORIAL, ANTIQUITÉ, CONTRAT, VÉLIN, DOCUMENT, MANUSCRIT, PAPIER ANTIKE, BRIEF, PERGAMENT, DOKUMENT, MANUSKRIPT, PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO, ATTO, VELINA, DOCUMENTO, MANOSCRITTO, CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD, HECHO, VITELA, DOCUMENTO, MANUSCRITO, PAPEL, Emily C.
