Die von Exilanten in Paris gegründete »Deutsche demokratische Gesellschaft«, als deren politischer Präsident ihr Mann Georg Herwegh gewählt wurde, gründete eine »Legion« und marschierte über Straßburg nach Deutschland, um den badischen Aufständischen um Friedrich Hecker zur Hilfe zu eilen. Das Ziel war es, im Großherzogtum Baden, wie es zuvor in Paris geschehen war, die demokratische Republik auszurufen.Das Unternehmen endete jedoch in einer vernichtenden Niederlage, und Emma und Georg Herwegh mussten, als politisch Verbannte und steckbrieflich gesuchte »Verräter«, wie schon in den Jahren zuvor im Exil leben. Von dort aus kämpften sie weiter für ein freiheitliches und demokratisches Deutschland und Europa.Die Buchreihe versammelt erstmals die Schriften, Biografien, Gedanken und Geschichten der frühen Demokrat\*innen und würdigt sie.
