Dr. Ernst Emmerling war ein Ururenkel des Ehrenbürgers Albert Gerhard de Roock, Urenkel der Freifrau Friederike Gertrude van Krieken und Enkel von Antonia Schüler, einer Tochter des Ehepaares van Krieken Von Ingelheim aus trat er als Autor anspruchsvoller historischer und kunsthistorischer Publikationen in Erscheinung, mit denen er sich in der Fachwelt einen Namen machte. 1950 wurde er Mitbegründer der regionalen Vereinigung der Heimatfreunde am Mittelrhein und hatte auch darin von 1953 bis 1973 den Vorsitz inne. Im Rahmen dieser Aktivitäten genoss für ihn die literarische Arbeit Priorität. Er wollte einen großen Leserkreis ansprechen.
