Hjalmar came to America from Sweden after completing his basic education to join the Union Army in the Civil War and actually saw the battle of the Monitor and the Merrimac. Illness forced his resignation from the Army in 1863. He then became a graduate student and teacher at Yale and later professor and dean at the U of Nebraska, a translator Sanskrit and American literature and a poet. For intermittent periods, he was a teacher at Lund University in Sweden and a professor at Goteborg University. His dual loyalty enriched not only his life but also both nations. A clean very presentable copy. Signed by Author(s).
