A history of the Netherlands and the Batavians, with two foldable maps of the Netherlands and many plates. Engraved frontispiece by R. Vinkeles. The so-called "Batavian myth" is a tradition invented in the 16th century. As Tacitus described in his writings, the Batavians retained a limited degree of autonomy after their subjugation to the Romans: they were exempt from paying taxes, but had to defend the limes. This origin myth became increasingly popular over the course of the centuries. The inhabitants of the Netherlands were represented as descendants of the Batavians, and Tacitus' source served as historical evidence of the Dutch enjoying political freedom since ancient times.Dutch History - Batavian - Bataafs - ontstaansmythe - Nederland - Bataven in Nederland Red-speckled paper on cardboard, 22.4 x 13.3 cm., paper partly worn off, one paper ticket loosening.
