Dans cette pièce en quatre actes, l'écrivain et pamphlétaire Jules Lecomte (1810-1864) "veut nous faire toucher du doigt tous les maux qui peuvent s'abattre sur un ménage dont la passion du luxe absorbe les ressources aux dépens des nécessités de la vie, passion d'autant plus malheureuse et coupable, quand elle s'est introduite dans une famille dont la fortune est modeste, et qu'elle doit en peu de temps conduire à la ruine".
