Neuner 921.- Engerth (1814-1884), österreichischer Architekt und Ingenieur, wurde bekannt als der Entwickler der ersten praxistauglichen Gebirgslokomotive. 1844 wurde er Professor der Mechanik und Maschinenlehre am Joanneum in Graz. Engerth wurde 1850 zum technischen Rat bei der Generaldirektion für Eisenbahnen ernannt, übernahm später im österreichischen Handelsministerium das Referat für Maschinenwesen, trat 1855 bei der Staatseisenbahngesellschaft als Zentraldirektor ein und wurde später deren Generaldirektor. Bei der Wiener Weltausstellung 1873 fungierte er als Chef des gesamten Ingenieurwesens und leitete als Chefingenieur den Bau der Ausstellungshallen. Er setzte sich für die Durchtunnelung des Arlbergs ein. 1874 wurde er in das Herrenhaus des österreichischen Reichsrats berufen und 1875 in den Freiherrenstand erhoben.

To an unidentified friend and colleague, writing about the poor state of his health only months before his death: "Ich habe lange ausgesetzt Ihnen Nachricht zu geben in der Hoffnung Ihnen nun Positives u. Günstiges berichten zu können. Leider ist dies noch immer nicht der Fall. Meine Gesichtsfarbe hat sich zwar bedeutend gebessert ich schlafe auch ziemlich gut aber mein Magen u. meine Verdauung ist immer noch nicht in Ordnung und ich fühle mich noch so matt u. schwach, daß ich nicht weiß, ob in dieser Beziehung noch eine Besserung eingetreten ist [.]" (11 April 1884). - On stationery with calligraphed monogram. - Engerth is famous for being the designer of the first practical mountain locomotive. He did important work on regulating the Danube river and invented a barrier for preventing floating ice from entering the Danube canal.
