The trials & exile, return & revenge of Odysseus are consummately chanted in a verse-line that embodies both Homer's speed & his retardations, as well as his resonating repetitions. Mandelbaum gives us an "Odyssey" as astute & "thought-ful" as its protagonist, the "man of many wiles." The language of this hero & this Homer lets us see w/ clarity why the "Odyssey" played so rich a role in a culture bent on energy of form & energy of intellect. Like Homer's Greek, Mandelbaum's English rewards attentive minds & ears. It must be read aloud & savored, & long reflected upon. * HIGHEST PRAISE: "What makes Mandelbaum's 'Odyssey' so special is its capacity to let Homeric epic sing in the rhythms & idiom of a living language, a splendid achievement outstripping all competitors." -Antony A. Long, Author of 'Hellenistic Philosophy: Stoics, Epicureans, Sceptics' * ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR: ALLEN MANDELBAUM is the author of 5 verse volumes, including 'The Savantasse of Montparnasse' ("one of the most oriiginal & most important poems written in English during the last 50 years" - Bruce Weigle, Choice), the 'Aeneid of Virgil' & the 3 volumes of the 'California Dante'. Mandelbaum is the William R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of Humanities at Wakwe Forest University. * SHIPPING: MNEMOSYNE carefully wraps, labels & packages this fine book w/ our greatest elegance & care for FREE shipment via USPS MEDIA MAIL within the United States & its territories or via USPS PRIORITY MAIL for a below cost fee of $16.00 w/ shipping to all international destinations via USPS FIRST CLASS MAIL at our posted rates.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrated with 248 engravings (from Gerster's photographs) and three chromo-lithographic plates (illustrator). 1st Edition. A book of 6-3/4 X 9-7/8 inches in original blind-ruled brown cloth with gilt titles to spine, 332 pp. including Index followed by a 56 pp. illustrated publisher's catalog (including an illustrated ad for this title -- see final scan), ending with a full-page ad for The Popular Science Monthly at $5.00 per annum. The three color plates remain present and firmly attached. Bookplate of the Medical Society Library of the County of Kings, indicating the book's donation by Dr. Chas de Szigethy of Brooklyn (who also signs to top of title page) stamped "Withdrawn." There is an inch-and-a-half tear (gap) to the blank yellow free front endpaper, at the spine, evidently caused by the removal of an earlier bookplate from this free endpaper. Gerster, born in Hungary and arriving in America in 1873, became president of the American Surgical Association in 1911. This was the first American surgical text based on Listerian principles. It caused a furor, since at the time suppuration was considered a natural sequence of every surgical procedure. It was printed on heavy calendered paper with many halftone illustrations, then unusual in scientific books. (Gerster made his own plates, at a time when photography by an amateur was unusual.) Reduced from $280.
