De organische chemie met haar geordend stelsel van structuurformules levert voor beginnende leerlingen het gevaar op de structuurformules op zich zelf, afgescheiden van de feiten, die zij vertegenwoordigen, te veel op… den voorgrond te brengen en als algebraïsche formules uit elkander af te leiden. Men laat reacties op papier verloopen, die wel in een algemeen schema passen, doch in de werkelijkheid niet of zeer onvolledig en met tal van bijreacties plaats vinden. Wij hebben daarom getracht het schematische te vermijden, steeds feiten en reacties voorop te stellen en te doen uitkomen, dat de structuurformules alleen waarde hebben ter uitdrukking en verklaring der reacties en uit reacties voortkomen. Groote zorg is daarom aan de ontwikkeling der structuurformules besteed; zij zijn slechts daar gegeven en gebruikt, waar zij noodig waren. De physische chemie bewijst in dit deel soortgelijke diensten als in het eerste. Zij wordt alleen daar ter sprake gebracht, waar de feiten er op eenvoudige wijze door opgehelderd kunnen worden. Zoo ook in de anorganische chemie, waar o.a. de ionen eerst aan de orde kwamen bij de behandeling der metalen, omdat de voornaamste werkingen bij de metalloiden geen ionen-reacties zijn; omdat daarbij de affiniteit en niet de electriciteit de groote rol speelt. Om aan dit deel niet te grooten omvang te geven en toch het technische gedeelte niet te verwaarloozen en den leerling gelegenheid te geven, ook van minder belangrijk te achten stoffen en reacties kennis te nemen, hebben wij de kleine letter moeten invoeren. Het is echter geenszins de bedoeling, alles wat het boek bevat ter behandeling op de les aan te bieden. Als aanhangsel vindt men in dit deel de bepaling der atoomgewichten en het periodieke stelsel der elementen. Het is ons gebleken, dat velen het laatste ongaarne in een leerboek missen. The work deals w…ith improving farm techiques, in particular agriculture, and is loosely based on earlier German works by R. Veit and Fries. Chapters deal, e.g., with meadow plants (herbs, weeds), forage, pasture, and fodder crops. The illustrations show country household tools from England, and methods for improving land, etc. Two small library stamps and blind stamp on title. The spine cover is rather crude and simple; otherwise a very good copy.
