Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. Second Edition. xii, 195 & [1, ad] pages; Contemporary pattern-printed paper-covered boards, pale blue-green endpapers. Date is approximate. Original front printed wrapper is now mounted to the inner surface (recto) of the rear free-endpaper. Second edition of this useful little book, now quite scarce, which compiles over 1300 sayings, slogans and expressions in verse. The author specifies on the title page that these short verses, mostly one- to four lines, may be used by Bakers, Gold and Silversmiths, Artists and Craftsmen of many sorts. The first edition was published with a date specified of 1844, and an identical collection, under a very slightly different title: ["Neues Spruch- und Devisen-Buch."]. OCLC Number: 251689914 (citing a single location only: Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin - Preussischer Kulturbesitz ). (A search of the many German libraries covered by the Karlsruher Virtueller Katalog shows only the copies at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, of the 1844 first edition, and this undated "Zweite Ausgabe - um 1845"). The binding shows considerable rubbing and wear along the hinges, the spine ends and corners. First and last several leaves foxed, two tips of lower corners turned in, and a few stray pencil marks here and there (one verse is crossed out). The original front wrapper, printed on pale green paper, has been trimmed to the decorative border, and mounted at the rear. The original price is stated on this wrapper: "Preis 15 Sgr." [15 Silbergroschen = one half Thaler].
