Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In this classic work that continues to inspire its many readers, Jim Lovelock puts forward his idea that life on earth functions as a single organism. Written for non-scientists, Gaia is a journey through time and space in search of evidence with which to support a new and radically different model of our planet. In contrast to conventional belief that living matter is passive in the face of threats to its existence, the book explores the hypothesis that the earth's living matter air, ocean, and land surfaces forms a complex system that has the capacity to keep the Earth a fit place for life. Since Gaia was first published, many of Jim Lovelock's predictions have come true and his theory has become a hotly argued topic in scientific circles. In a new Preface to this reissued title, he outlines his present state of the debate. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Written for non-scientists, Gaia is a journey through time and space in search of evidence in support of a radically different model of our planet. In contrast to conventional belief that life is passive in the face of threats to its existence, the book explores the hypothesis that the Earth's living matter influences air, ocean, and rock to form a complex, self-regulating system that has the capacity to keep the Earth a fit place for life. Since Gaia was first published, Jim Lovelock's hypothesis has become a hotly debated topic in scientific circles. In a new Preface to this edition, he outlines his view of the present state of the debate. Condition: Very good. - Typed letter filling one side of an approximately 11 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide sheet of his personalized letterhead with a couple of lines on a follow-up sheet. Signed "Tony". The top edge of each sheet is creased & each has a tiny chip, a paper-clip mark & pinholes where a staple has been removed in the top left corner. Folded 3 times for mailing. Very good. Smith sends friendly regrets that as he only comes to New York at weekends for events such as CIO conventions he will not be in New York in the near future and cannot accept an invitation to take part in one of Harold Rugg's lunchtime forums at Teachers College. Smith's letterhead has a New York address but he had actually been living in Washington since 1937.Much of the letter concerns the travails of the National Conservation Foundation [NCF], and the impossibility of cooperation between communists and fellow travelers and trade unionists and democratic progressives. He notes that the NCF has now reorganized itself and he has decided to rejoin it.Anthony Wayne Smith [d. 1992] had worked as a labor lawyer in New York and took a variety of labor-related jobs when he moved to Washington. He was attorney for the AFL-CIO Political Action Committee from 1956 to 1958 when he became president and counsel of the National Parks and Conservation Association. The Army Corps of Engineers nicknamed him "Mad Anthony Wayne Smith" for the sharpness of his attacks on their construction plans for the Potomac Basin. He also orchestrated campaigns that led to the establishment of the Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts, Fire Island National Seashore in New York and Point Reyes National Seashore in California, among others. He was outspoken in his warnings against overdevelopment and overuse of National Parks. One of the best-known educators during the Progressive era of education, Harold Rugg [1886-1960] was a professor of education at Teachers College of Columbia University. A civil engineer, he had become interested in how students learn and pursued a doctorate in education. He was responsible for producing the very first series of school textbooks from 1929 until the 1940s.

From James Mitchell addressed to Hon. George P. Marsh, a letter outlining libraries, transactions and booksellers, many in England. James Mitchell was the British author of 'Conversations On General Knowledge or Universal Catechist Consisting of Superior Separate Catechisms of all Arts and Sciences' in 1837. The letter is addressed to Honorable George P. Marsh, considered America's first environmentalist. In 1864 he published, "Man and Nature" later revised as 'The Earth as Modified by Human Action.' He applied science to life, with the aims and methods of a humanist rather than a scientist. Marsh was also the first US ambassador to Italy. He reported to the Secretary of State in Washington DC detailed and updated descriptions of the political, social, economic and cultural situation on the peninsula. 4to, 2pp, original folds, undated however a postmark of "Dec. 9 Washington City DC" listed on the front with an amended address. Originally addressed to 'Mr. Marsh, Member of Parliament for Vermont [who possesses one of the best libraries in the United States]' which is then crossed out and written, "Hon., Geo. P. Marsh, Astor House, New York." Paper toned, split at one fold, otherwise very good.
