Seine Arbeitsgebiete sind die Enzyme und der Aminosäure-Stoffwechsel. Die klare, einheitliche Gliederung des Taschenbuches macht es zu einem idealen Nachschlagewerk für den Studenten der Biochemie. Der große Vorteil liegt in der Reduzierung umfangreicher Inhalte auf deren wesentliche Elemente, dargestellt auf jeweils einer Text- und der zugehörigen Grafikseite. Es ist wichtig, nicht zu vergessen, dass der Taschenatlas einzig dem Zweck dient, eine Übersicht zu bieten. Es besteht nicht der Selbstanspruch auf Genauigkeit bis ins Detail. Die Autoren haben jedoch den vorhandenen Platz mit größtmöglicher Ausführlichkeit ausgenutzt. Das Problem, den Text mit entsprechenden Grafiken zu reflektieren, ist in den meisten Fällen sehr gut gelöst worden. Moderne grafische Techniken und eine vielfarbige Darstellung machen die Grafikseiten schlichtweg interessant. Sie wurden offensichtlich mit viel Liebe zum Detail ausgearbeitet. Gut gelungen ist meiner Ansicht nach auch die Aufteilung komplexerer Themengebiete in inhaltliche Abschnitte mit unterschiedlichen Schwerpunkten. Der Taschenatlas hat seine Stärken in bezug auf den Inhalt sicherlich in den Abschnitten Biomoleküle und Stoffwechsel. Demgegenüber kommen andere Abschnitte wie die Molekulare Genetik etwas zu kurz. Bei wiederum anderen Abschnitten wie Wachstum und Entwicklung fiel es naturgemäß schwer, eine Auswahl der zu präsentierenden Inhalte zu treffen, da das Gebiet nicht so einheitlich untergliedert ist wie z.B. der Stoffwechsel. Trotzdem - als Nachschlagewerk ist der Taschenatlas für mich unverzichtbar geworden. Der Taschenatlas der Biochemie, der inzwischen in 9 Sprachen weltweit erscheint, wurde aktualisiert und erweitert. Mit übersichtlichen Grafiken und knappen Texten gibt er einen umfassenden Überblick über die Gegenstände der Ärztlichen Vorprüfung (Physikum) und der Vordiplomsprüfungen in Biochemie und verwandten naturwissenschaftlichen Studiengängen. Auch für Fortgeschrittene kann er als Referenz zum Nachschlagen und zur schnellen Orientierung über einzelne Themen gute Dienste leisten. In 215 Farbtafeln ist der aktuelle Stand des biochemischen Wissens zusammengefasst. Neue Themen sind z.B. nichtproteinogene Aminosäuren, Isoenzyme, Ionenkanäle, Membran-Rezeptoren, Transkriptionskontrolle, Proteinreifung, Eisen- und Calcium-Stoffwechsel, Signalkaskaden und Gentherapie. Der Stoff ist klar gegliedert in Chemische Grundlagen, Biomoleküle, Stoffwechsel, Zellorganellen, Molekulare Genetik, Gewebe und Organe, Ernährung, Hormone und Zellproliferation. Alle wichtigen Strukturformeln sind griffbereit und werden erläutert. Konsequent verwendete grafische Symbole und Farbcodes für Moleküle, Zellbestandteile und biochemische Prozesse erleichtern das Lesen. Viele Moleküle erscheinen in realitätsnahen 3D-Darstellungen. Schwierige Themen der Chemie und Physikalischen Chemie wie Isomerie, Enthalpie, Entropie oder Katalyse werden verständlich dargestellt. Biochemische Methoden und ihre theoretischen Grundlagen werden in Bildern anschaulich gemacht, z.B. Photometrie, Proteintrennungen, Elektrophorese, Ultrazentrifugation, Enzymimmunoassay, Klonierung, DNA-Sequenzierung und PCR. Auch medizinisch relevante Themen sind berücksichtigt, z.B. Heinrich Gehringer, der als Studierender der Chemie zur wissenschaftlichen Hilfskraft am Ersten chemischen Universitätslaboratorium in Wien bestellt war, verfaßt. In Ermangelung eines Forschungsprojektes durch einen "unfruchtbaren Theoretiker an der Spitze des Laboratoriums" (Vorwort), hat sich der Vater Dr. H. Gehringer selbst nach einem Forschungsgebiet für seinen Sohn umgesehen und kam dabei auf die Enzyme. Im Allgemeinen fand das Gebiet nur bei wenigen Wissenschaftlern Beachtung. Einige Enzymwirkungen (Gärung, Verdauung, Atmung) waren schon vor dem 19. Jahrhundert bekannt, ohne daß man etwas über ihre Ursachen wußte. Der Begriff "Enzym", gleichbedeutend mit "Ferment" wurde 1878 von W. Kühne eingeführt. - Saubere einseitig und auch beidseitig beschrieben Handschrift von einer Hand in blauer Tinte und mit vielen zusätzlich Einschüber, Hervorhebungen und Unterstreichungen. Schöne, gut lesbare Handschrift, die als Manuskript verblieb.
