Hardback. Condition: New. The love of books in the Jewish tradition extends back over many centuries, and the ways of interpreting those books are as myriad as the traditions themselves. Skies of Parchment, Seas of Ink offers the first full survey of Jewish illuminated manuscripts, ranging from their origins in the Middle Ages to the present day. Featuring some of the most beautiful examples of Jewish art of all time--including hand-illustrated versions of the Bible, the Haggadah, the prayer book, marriage documents, and other beloved Jewish texts--the book introduces readers to the history of these manuscripts and their interpretation. Edited by Marc Michael Epstein with contributions from leading experts, this sumptuous volume features a lively and informative text, showing how Jewish aesthetic tastes and iconography overlapped with and diverged from those of Christianity, Islam, and other traditions. Featured manuscripts were commissioned by Jews and produced by Jews and non-Jews over many centuries, and represent Eastern and Western perspectives and the views of both pietistic and liberal communities across the Diaspora, including Europe, Israel, the Middle East, and Africa.Magnificently illustrated with pages from hundreds of manuscripts, many previously unpublished or rarely seen, Skies of Parchment, Seas of Ink offers surprising new perspectives on Jewish life, presenting the books of the People of the Book as never before.

Condition: Good. Original pictorial wraps. 18.2 x 25.8cm. 34pp.The Motion Picture Library was a pioneering bilingual film publication launched in Tokyo in post-WWII Japan (1946-1948). Aimed at bridging American pop culture and Japanese audiences, it printed full English scripts, actor profiles, and bilingual synopses of imports like Casablanca. The emergence of these bilingual or heavily translated film resources during the mid-1940s marked a dramatic cultural shift. Following wartime censorship and the total ban of foreign films, the sudden influx of Hollywood movies under the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers (SCAP) created a boom in cine-literacy. ."M?shon pikuch? raiburar?" wa, dainijisekaitaisengo no Nihon (1946-nen ? 1948-nen) ni oite, T?ky? de s?kan sa reta senku-tekina bairingaru eiga shuppan-monodeatta. Vintage reference photograph from the 1944 film, showing cast and crew members, including director Frank Capra and actors Cary Grant, Priscilla Lane, Jean Adair, and Raymond Massey, posed together at what appears to be a wrap party. From the archive of film historian and author Joel Finler. Capra's beloved, classic rendition of the 1939 Joseph Kesselring play, today considered a high point in Cary Grant's career. Production on the film ended in 1941, only a few days after the United States entered World War II, though the film's release would be delayed until 1944 due to a contractual obligation with the Broadway show. Capra applied for a commission with the Signal Corps, and would make no further commercial films until his discharge, beginning with 1946's "It's a Wonderful Life." Set in Brooklyn. 10 x 8 inches, with wide margins (image measuring 4.5 x 3.75 inches). Very Good, with moderate wear on the margin and a two inch closed tear on the right edge. Byrge and Miller, The Screwball Comedy Films.
