Sous le pseudonyme anagrammatique d'Alexandre Erdan, Alexandre André Jacob (1826-1878) rassemble ici plusieurs de ses articles parus en 1853 dans La Presse, journal d'Émile Girardin. Après une philippique dirigée comme il se doit contre l'Académie française, l'auteur consacre ses réflexions à la réforme de l'orthographe, au développement d'un alphabet et d'une langue universels ou encore aux réformes sténographiques. Partisan du progrès et de l'amélioration des langues, cet écrivain engagé qui se définit lui-même comme "voltairien", argumente en faveur de la réforme et de la simplification de l'orthographe. Il adopte une position "phonocentriste", c'est-à-dire qu'il encourage la mise en place d'une écriture qui, délaissant les graphèmes contraints par l'étymologie, restituerait la prononciation des mots. Cette amélioration permettrait selon lui de rendre la langue française plus accessible et plus démocratique, notamment pour les populations colonisées. Bon exemplaire.
