Original teal blue wrappers with white title label printed in burgundy laid-on, stab-stitched with decorative burgundy string. Housed in a modern, full gazelle brown crushed morocco felt-lined clamshell box designed and executed by Richard Smart (unsigned), with gilt ruled borders, gilt rules, title, and ornament to spine. Upper board of the clamshell bears an arresting central design of the female vulva moulded in blind bas-relief against a background of public hair lightly tooled and moulded in blind, the whole highlighted with a gilt spray: the flower of womanhood. The celebrated classic original American erotic novel, a collection of explicit short stories related by "the professor" in Socratic dialogues with a traveling salesman, a druggist, and a barber - local denizens who have been trading low-brow dirty stories - the better to raise their consciousness about, and appreciation of, the many dimensions of female sexuality. Ironies abound in erotica. The author, Lupton Wilkinson (1897-1954), was a top executive in The Hays Office, Hollywood's self-censorship bureau, established in the '20's to clean up indecency in front of and behind the camera at a time when sexual situations and behavior in the movies had become, by period standards, controversially overt and sexsationalistic. He helped develop and execute a campaign to rein in the studios and supportive fanzines, leaving the job in 1936 to become a regular contributor to the very magazines he had been battling against, apparently fed up with hypocrisy.
