Storia di un moralista è uno dei più importanti romanzi sul disfacimento della repubblica di Weimar e sulla Germania nell'epoca immediatamente precedente all'ascesa del nazismo. Erich Kästner (Dresda 1899 - Monaco di Baviera 1974) è stato giornalista, scrittore…e sceneggiatore. Nel periodo della repubblica di Weimar divenne uno dei più importanti intellettuali di Berlino, scrivendo testi per il cabaret letterario e pubblicando poesie, articoli, recensioni e libri per ragazzi. A causa di alcuni pezzi satirci sul militarismo della Germania del periodo nazista, i suoi libri vennero bruciati e messi al bando e nel 1943 gli fu proibito di scrivere, ma Kästner preferì la patria all'esilio. Nel dopoguerra si traferì a Monaco, dove continuò la sua attività lavorando al quotidiano «Neue Zeitung» e per la radio. In questo periodo i suoi libri per i ragazzi furono tradotti in numerose lingue e da parecchi suoi romanzi furono tratti dei film, tra cui nel 1980 Fabian, diretto da Wolf Gremm.
