In het onderhavige boek, opgezet volgens hetzelfde stramien, komen in 104 alfabetisch geordende lemmata (veel meer dan 104) personen en thema's uit de klassieke geschiedenis aan de beurt. Bij de keuze en de presentatie van de figuren staat de continu?teit, het voortleven van thema's in de (Westeuropese) cultuur, centraal. Natuurlijk blijft discussie over de gemaakte keuzes altijd mogelijk: zo hadden meer antieke kunstenaars en geleerden opgenomen kunnen worden en is bij het voortleven de literatuur ten opzichte van de beeldende kunst wat ondervertegenwoordigd. Maar het boek bevat zoveel zorgvuldig bijeengebrachte, goed gepresenteerde, leesbare informatie, uitstekend ontsloten door 2 indices en een gedegen bibliografie en prachtig uitgegeven (met veel fraaie illustraties in zwart-wit), dat dit slechts kanttekeningen zijn. Gecorrigeerde herdruk.
