Hard cover, 8vo, in half gray buckram with illustrated paper-covered boards featuring facsimile manuscript of the great Polar explorer Douglas Mawson, title to black printed labels to the spine, gilt, 274 pp. First Edition. Condition Fine (as new). A biography of Australian… Sir Douglas Mawson, (1882-1958), once a member of Shackleton's Nimrod Expedition 1907-1909. Later, in 1911-1914, Mawson would have the epic survival adventure to complete the Australasian Antarctic Expedition. Originally a three man scientific party, he would finish the expedition alone, suffering what is described as " the ultimate test of strength and endurance, an ordeal of almost unimaginable proportions." This volume is reprinted from a 1977 title with additions, including a forward by Sir Edmund Hillary, reproduction glass-plate photographs, and a new Author's Notes, as well as a reprint of Mawson's expedition diary.
