Il révèle l'activité d'un artiste alchimiste, autrement nommé « l'imagicien » selon Camille Saint-Jacques lui-même, qui a su s'approprier la pauvreté des matériaux pour la convertir en richesse esthétique. Les uvres réunies pour cette actualité font partie des créations les plus récentes de l'artiste et ne représentent qu'une part de sa production protéiforme. L'ouvrage reproduit dans sa toute première partie plus d'une soixantaine d'aquarelles (de XLII 136 Three holed nose à LVI 352), suivie du texte d'Eric Suchère (« L'Imagicien », p. 3-23). Malgré la place importante accordée aux images, celles-ci sont privées de la luminosité caractéristique de cette technique picturale. L'effet un peu sombre, généré par le fond gris de la mise en page, restitue mal les vibrations de la lumière et des couleurs des oeuvres. Eric Suchère, quant à lui, invite le lecteur à une plongée dans l'univers artistique de Camille Saint-Jacques, guidée par la proximité de ses échanges et par l'intimité de ses relations avec l'artiste (nombreuses sont les citations extraites des correspondances entre les deux hommes). Comment écrire sur l'uvre d'un théoricien et praticien comme Camille Saint-Jacques compte tenu de l'importance de ce qu'il déploie au quotidien ? Partant de cette réflexion, Eric Suchère développe une analyse raffinée et engagée de l'uvre de Camille Saint-Jacques et de l'ensemble de son parcours. L'auteur ne cherche pas à compléter ce qui fait défaut au discours théorique de l'artiste. Il fonde au contraire sa réflexion sur la perception et la réception des uvres de Camille Saint-Jacques, sans les soumettre à aucune classification. 3Les faits les plus significatifs de la vie militante de l'artiste, ceux qui ont forgé de l'intérieur sa façon d'être au monde de l'art et de se situer vis-à-vis du marché, déterminent un positionnement sur la gratuité et sur l'économie (au premier degré) de sa pratique (Cf. la partie « L'économie/Le don », p. 8-10). L'uvre de Camille Saint-Jacques se façonne sur l'observation des choses quotidiennes même s'il ne les représente pas et se fonde sur un dialogue avec la beauté et le « caractère créateur de la perception » (p. 14).
